When people are paying attention, they will start to notice and appreciate the musical intricacies and complexities that went into making the song, rather than see it as annoying background noise.

The music is not some background distraction but instead the primary focus of the evening. Why is it that songs simply just sound better live, when the artist is in front of us performing? Aside from the halo effect of the audience loving the artist and thus loving the music by proxy, I’d argue that the main reason is because they are there solely to see the artist and hear the music. I don’t argue that this isn’t true, the quality of the listening medium certainly makes a difference to the perceived quality of the song, especially to an audiophile such as myself. ClarityĮxpanding on the above point, you could argue that although both listenings of the same song were in the background while I was primarily focussed on one task (eating dinner and writing assignments on my computer respectively), I enjoyed the latter because the studio headphones were better quality and thus made the music sound better. I’ve found myself ignoring or even disliking songs completely when hearing them in the background via restaurant radio but later discovered my new favourite song of the month when listening to the exact same song through my studio headphones when it popped up in mix I was listening to.

The medium through which we listen to music can drastically effect our enjoyment of it. Allow me to elaborate on each.Ĭar stereo, HI-FI system, laptop speakers, phone speakers, Apple earbuds, headphones, club system, shopping mall radio. From my experience, there are several factors that effect our enjoyment of a piece of music. Don’t get me wrong, catchy melodies, inspiring chord structures, beautiful vocals and a clean mix down still play an essential role in how good we perceive a song to be but there are also external factors at play that can make or break our enjoyment of a tune. Listening environment, clarity, attention level, volume, number of exposures.
